Former President Mahinda Rajapakse has been summoned by the CID to be present at their office on August 17th in order to record a statement relating to the abduction and assaults made on Keith Noyahr journalist of the Nation newspaper. The summons signed by the Senior DIG of the CID Ravi Senevirathne had been handed over at the official residence of the Former President Mahinda Rajapakse in Wijerama Mawatha

News: HALO expects to free Jaffna from mines by late 2019

HALO Trust, the largest international mine action operator in Sri Lanka, said it’s current chief goal is to complete mine clearance of Jaffna by the end of 2019, as only 24 sq.km. of minefields are remaining there. Since 2002, manual and mechanical clearance teams of HALO Trust have cleared nearly 11.5 sq.km. of minefields and 16.5sq.km. of former battlefield areas in the country

Lieutenant Commander Chandana Hettiarachchi also known as ‘Navy Sampath’, arrested for the abduction and disappearance of 11 youths from Colombo, has been remanded until August 29th. He was arrested at Lotus Road by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), yesterday (14).

Sri Lanka's chief of defence staff Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne gave half a million rupees in cash to help the main suspect in the abduction and murder of 11 children escape arrest, the Colombo magistrate was told Wednesday. Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne ordered the bank of Ceylon to provide details of a navy account from which 500,000 rupees had been given to Hettiarachchi Mudiyanselage Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi alias Navy Sampath last year to escape the police net.

UK funding will help nearly 600 families in the Jaffna, Killinochchi, Mullaithivu and Batticaloa districts of Sri Lanka. Nearly 600 families resettled on newly released land in the North and East of Sri Lanka will benefit from £1 million from the UK Government to support the provision of basic infrastructure and services.

Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Umar Khalid was shot at outside the Constitution Club today, with eyewitnesses saying that one bullet was fired. Nobody was injured in the incident. News: Police arrest 17 members of sword gangs in North

The U.S. Department of State yesterday announced it will provide about $39 million in Foreign Military Financing for Sri Lanka, pending Congressional approval. “We look forward to discussing with the Government of Sri Lanka how this contribution can support our Bay of Bengal initiative and Sri Lanka’s humanitarian assistance and disaster response priorities,” it said in a statement.

Leading Dutch Archaeologist Oscar Hefting was in Sri Lanka recently to visit the Dutch heritage sites in the country and discuss measures for their proper conservation. The Dutch East India Company drove out the Portuguese from Sri Lanka in 1636 and established its rule over the maritime provinces. It ended after the British conquered Sri Lanka and ousted the Dutch. Mr. Hefting spoke of similarities between the Galle Fort and the fortified town of Naarden in the Netherlands. He is currently the Director of Dutch Fortress Museum. He shared his thoughts on the Dutch heritage in Sri Lanka in an interview with Daily Mirror.
