News: Sri Lanka President drops assassination bombshell, accuses India

Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena shocked his cabinet Tuesday by accusing neighbouring India of plotting to assassinate him on the eve of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s visit to New Delhi, a ministerial source said. A visibly upset Sirisena accused his senior coalition partner, the United National Party (UNP), of not taking an alleged conspiracy to kill him as well as former secretary to the ministry of defence, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, seriously.

News: Sri Lanka Supreme Court affirms death penalty of Duminda Silva

Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court Thursday confirmed the death sentence handed down the former defence ministry monitoring MP Duminda Silva for the murder of a fellow legislator and three others. The five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Priyasath Dep affirmed the conviction and punishment given by the High Court in September 2016 for the murder that took place during an election campaign in 2011.

A British Tamil activist has been arrested and detained by UK police after protesting the visit of the Sri Lankan Prime Minister in Oxford on Monday night. Mr Sockalingam Yogalingam also known as Yogi, a member of the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) was arrested last night by Thames Valley police, along with at least three other protesters.

The investigation into the abduction and the murder of 11 children has taken a new turn with fresh evidence showing the involvement of former navy chief Wasantha Karannagoda, a magistrate has been told. Criminal investigators told the Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne last week that Karannagoda intimately knew about the abductions and is continuing to suppress evidence and was keeping a tab on key navy witnesses.
