The recent news of a Government member directly engaged in interactions with underworld figures who have been recruited as the said Minister’s security detail has become the latest report to trend. Yet, it does not come as a surprise to many. By now, our society has become riddled with corrupt politicians, politician puppets strung up by malicious figures, criminals turned politicians and vice versa, political leaders who cover up and defend high profile criminals and such.

News: Ukrainian border guards detain illegal migrants from Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh

Border guards of the Lviv and Lutsk detachments and the operative and search unit of the Eastern Regional Directorate have detained 13 illegal migrants - from Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh, the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service has reported. News: Disabled Soldiers’ Association seeks Supreme Court intervention

The Sri Lanka Disabled Soldiers’ Association has complained to the Supreme Court that when its members had gathered peacefully to protest against the non-payment of their pensions and the other due compensation the police arrested the petitioners. The petitioners have said they served in the North, during the country’s war against terrorism and suffered disabilities. They served in the army for over ten years and were eligible for pension.

News: New Constitution: TNA seeks int’l backing for its cause

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) yesterday reiterated its call for the enactment of a new Constitution before the end of this year. TNA and Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan told the visiting Belgium-Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group it was important to enact the new Constitution this year.

News: Sri Lanka charges man deported from family by Australia

The Sri Lankan deported by Australia even though his partner had refugee status there was charged upon his return with illegally leaving his home country. Thileepan Gnaneswaran, who was separated from his wife and 11-month-old daughter, arrived in Colombo Tuesday along with another 17 who had also their asylum applications rejected by Australia.

Fathima Rameez had been teaching at Shanmuga Hindu Ladies College for five years and never feared for her safety in Trincomalee, a port city on the northeast coast of Sri Lanka. But that all changed on April 24. Early that morning, near the school, four men tried to attack another Muslim teacher with sticks. When Rameez arrived at work, 150 Hindu protesters were outside the school demanding five female Muslim teachers stop wearing their abaya robes.
