News: Birth, Death and Rebirth of Jaffna’s Moolai Cooperative Hospital

In the North-West corner of the Jaffna Peninsula close to the causeway to Karainagar Island is the small village of Moolai. It is a patch of land connecting the causeway to Karainagar with its famous Casuarina Beach, and Vaddukoddai with its famous school Jaffna College. Moolai would have been quite unknown but for its own famous Moolai Cooperative Hospital. A hospital founded in 1935 by returning Tamil Diaspora funded by their savings and pensions earned administering British Malaya.

President Sirisena had requested UPFA parliamentarians to pressure the government to hold Provincial Council elections, reported DM online last Wednesday. News: Highest unemployment among most educated in Sri Lanka

Unemployment in Sri Lanka, which has suffered three insurgencies led by educated youth, is highest among the most educated, and especially females, the latest labour force survey shows. The highest unemployment rate – of 9.5 percent - is from the G.C.E. Advanced Level and above qualified group, according to the third quarter 2018 survey by the Census and Statistics Department, up from 8.5 percent in the same quarter of 2017.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe tabled the report prepared by the Panel of Experts for the Steering Committee and representations made by political parties on drafting a new constitution, at the Constitutional Assembly today (11). Wickremesinghe, who is also the Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Constitutional Assembly, presenting the Expert Panel report assured that there is no plan to divide the country.
