News: Sri Lanka PM ouster move fizzles out as debate begins
Posted Date: 04/04/2018 (Wednesday)
A faction within President Maithripala Sirisena’s Sri Lanka Freedom Party announced it will abstain from the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the opposition failed to muster the numbers required to topple him. After failing in their attempts to pressure Wickremesinghe to step down, the Sirisena-faction was in two pieces – one supporting the no-confidence resolution and the other opposing it. SLFP state minister A. H. M. Fowzie who is in the “no-camp” opposing any moves to topple the government, told reporters that “they”, meaning the rebels within Sirisena faction, will abstain from voting allowing the premier to win by a big margin.

News: From Palmyrah To Paper – The Art Of The Ola Leaf Book
Posted Date: 04/04/2018 (Wednesday)
Written records were always considered a good method of preserving knowledge for the benefit of future generations. The earliest historical records could be found inscribed on material such as clay, metal tablets, and stone. With languages becoming more developed and complex as time went on, our ancestors realised that a more convenient medium was needed for written records. As a result, many South and East Asian countries such as India, Myanmar, Thailand, and, of course, Sri Lanka, began to use dried, old palmyrah leaves to make palm leaf manuscripts for the purpose of writing.
