Remarkably UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, pledged his support to the common presidential candidate. Thus, on January 8, 2015, Maithripala Sirisena was elected as President. He polled 62 million votes as against 58 million polled by opposing candidate Mahinda Rajapakse.The people also gave a mandate to the President to appoint Ranil Wickremesinghe, as the Prime Minister.

News: Sri Lanka to tighten controls over NGOs

Sri Lanka is to tighten controls over charities and civil society organizations, through changes to a 1980 law requiring the registration of voluntary organizations, Minister Gayantha Karunathilake said. The changes is partly driven by the requirement of the Financial Intelligence Unit of the Central Bank which is in charge of Anti-Money laundering/Combatting Terrorism Finance (AML/CFT), activities. Sri Lanka has fallen behind requirement of the global AML/CFT framework and is now in the so-called 'grey list'.

News: Sri Lanka police cover up in Lasantha murder emerge after key arrest

The arrest of a retired senior Deputy Inspector-General has revealed how the police scuttled its own investigations to protect military intelligence men who carried out the assassination of editor Lasantha Wickrematunge. Senior DIG Prasanna Nanayakkara who is currently in remand custody has allegedly instructed his juniors to not only botch the investigation, but also destroy evidence gathered from the crime scene, according to a confession by Senior Superintendent Hemantha Adhikari. It was Adhikari who led the investigation into Wickrematunge's assassination in January 2009 under the immediate supervision of DIG Nanayakkara who at the time was in charge of Western Province (south).

News: Kuwait amnesty period for Lankans ends today

The general amnesty period announced by the Kuwait government for Sri Lankans residing without a valid travel document ends today. The Kuwait government in January announced that Sri Lankans had the opportunity to leave Kuwait without having to pay a fine during the amnesty period. The Interior Ministry of Kuwait announced an amnesty period for all expatriates who do not have residence permits or whose residence permits have expired.

News: Thera gets patent for solar-powered vehicle

The chief incumbent of the International Meditation Centre at Rathmalkanda Aranyaya (hermitage) in Kitthalella, Bandarawela Ven. Madawala Upali Thera has received the patent license for his invention of solar-power operated motor vehicle. A unique feature of this vehicle is that there is no emission of carbon dioxide and sulpher dioxide to the environment, thereby helping to minimise air pollution and reduce global warming, according to the thera.

Sampanthan today said that the government was bound to implement the UNHRC resolution both in spirit and letter and called on the international community to ensure it was fully implemented. Highlighting the delays that have occurred in implementing the resolution he said that the International community must take necessary steps to ensure that the government is held accountable for the commitments made to the international community and to the people in Sri Lanka on implementing Cosponsored resolution at the UN Human Rights Council.

Sri Lanka has been listed among countries unsafe for Muslims in a newly released world report. In the report, Amnesty International notes that Sri Lanka saw a rise in Buddhist nationalist sentiment last year, including attacks against Christians and Muslims. In September, a group of hardline Buddhist monks attacked the homes of Rohingya refugees in Boosa, southern Sri Lanka. In November, dozens of home and businesses of Muslims were attacked near the southern city of Galle.
