Round Table discussion on the Impact of new Family Migration Rules on BME Communities
Published Date: 25/03/2013 (Monday)
In July 2012, the rules for family migration to the UK changed, particularly affecting the right of people to sponsor family members to come and join them in the UK. People now need to earn at least £18,600 per year in order to bring a partner here from outside the European Union, and it is much more difficult to bring elderly dependants to the UK than previously.
The All Party Parliamentary Group on Migration is currently running an inquiry into the impacts of the new rules, and early evidence from community organisations suggests that some Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities are being significantly affected.
Migrants Rights Network (MRN) and Race on the Agenda (ROTA) are organising a roundtable discussion on the Impact of new Family Migration Rules on BME Communities on 25th March 2013 from 10.00am to 12pm at the Migrants Rights Network, 33 Corsham Street, London, N1 6DR.
This roundtable will bring together key BME and migrant organisations in London to discuss the new family migration rules and their impacts on BME communities. Key points emerging from the debate will be fed into the APPG Migration inquiry as evidence but the discussion will run under Chatham House rules (i.e. comments will not be attributed to specific organisations).
This meeting is an opportunity for BME organisations to make their voices heard on a key policy issue on a sensitive topic such as family life.
