Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka must come forward to disclose the truth in a war crimes tribunal to enable the affected Tamil civilians to receive justice, said R. Sampanthan M.P., leader of the Opposition and of Tamil National Alliance.

In interview appeared recently in the Daily Mirror, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka said, “I received complaints that Mr. Jagath Jayasuriya was engaged in crimes as Vanni commander with regard to those who were arrested. He continued the same strategy even after he was promoted as army commander. I have information regarding those who committed the crimes. I am ready to explain the crimes committed in detail if proper legal action is instituted."

Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka has said that he was aware that Jagath Jayasuriya who was at that time the Secrity Forces Vanni commander and he added, “ I received complaints that Jayasuriya was engaged in crimes as Vanni Commander.”

Regarding this, when a Tamil language regional daily Uthayan contacted Leader of the Opposition and TNA Sampanthan for his comments, “ It was a fact that war crimes and crimes against humanity took place. A resolution has been adopted in the UN Human Rights Council for investigation by a hybrid court with international judges,” Sampanthan disclosed.

He said, “Already case has been filed in an international court against former Vanni Commander and later Sri Lankan Army Commander Jagath Jayasuriya”.

Samanthan pointed out, “Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka has publicly announced that Jagath Jayasuriya has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

“Therefore Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka could well come forward boldly, without reluctance or any feeling of guilt or fear, to reveal the truth, as a witness in an international tribunal and the Tamil National Alliance would always stand by him, assured Sampanthan.
