"One Mullivaikkal is enough. Don't try to get 100 more” – Sri Lanka Government Minister warns Tamils
Published Date: 18/06/2012 (Monday)

Expressing anger over the remarks of the TNA leader R Sampanthan , the Sri Lankan Power and Energy minister Champika Ranawaka from the JHU cautioned the island's Tamil population saying , "we appeal to the Tamil people not to go behind this kind of people and end up in getting 100 more Mullivaikkals".

The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) is a right wing constituent party of the ruling coalition, led by Buddhist monks

Minister Champika Ranawaka has warned of “100 more massacres” if the Tamil people of the island were to follow the Tamil National Alliance, who he accused of calling the “nation” out to fight.

Addressing reporters on the 8 June in Colombo, Minister Champika Ranawaka stated, "Does Sampanthan want to create 100 more Mullivaikkals?

We are ready to forgive and forget the past and think about the future. But, if Sampanthan is calling us to a fight, our nation would proudly accept the challenge."

"One Mullivaikkal is enough. Don't try to get 100 more."

The minister was responding to Tamil leader and MP Sampanthan’s speech at the national convention of the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) in Batticaola last month, where he stated it was uncompromising that the North-East be viewed as “areas of historical habitation of the Tamil speaking people.”

Sampanthan went on to say, “ We must have unrestricted authority to govern our own land, protect our own people, and develop our own economy, culture and tradition. A meaningful devolution should go beyond the 13th Amendment to the Constitution." If the Sri Lankan state continuously deny this right, we will claim our right under international law to external self determination ”.

The ITAK is the main constituent party of the Tamil national Alliance (TNA).

Ranawaka went on to say, "We appeal to the Tamil people not to go behind this kind of people and end up in getting 100 more Mullivaikkals".

Mullivaikkal is an area on the northeastern coast of the island where tens of thousands of Tamils were massacred during the final stage of the war between Sri Lankan troops and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in May 2009. Since then the area has become known as the final 'killing field' of the war. Tamils around the world hold annual commemorations named "Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day"on May 18th.
