Resolution of the impasse between Sri Lanka and China on the construction of a Chinese-funded port city at Colombo is not only indicative of the pragmatic policy posture of the Sri Lankan government, but also an important first step towards the materialisation of the maritime silk route initiative (MSRI) proposed by China. The new port city in Colombo, envisaging $1.4 billion investment by China on the Sri Lankan coast, had run into problems after the current Sri Lankan government headed by president Maithripala Sirisena assumed office little more than a year ago and held back the project.

The environmental NGO “Green Trincomalee” is planning legal action against the proposed Indo-Sri Lankan project to build a 500 MW coal-fired power plant at Sampur in the predominantly Tamil speaking Trincomallee District According to Green Trincomalee leader Thirunavukkarasu Gopahan the environmental impact study done by the Central Environment Authority was conducted when there were no people in the area.

News: Sri Lanka Army To Respond To US Human Rights Report

The Sri Lanka Army will respond to a US State Department report on human rights, based on the decisions taken by the government in this regard. Military Spokesman Brig. Jayanath Jayaweera told The Sunday Leader that the military will act upon the instructions given to them by the government, and that the government will take a decision on the matter shortly.

News: Mittal’s 65,000 steel houses under fire from Lankan experts

The proposed steel houses for the war-affected have inadequate foundations, insufficient roof support, are at risk of corrosion, are poorly ventilated and have no hearth and chimney, Moratuwa Universtiy experts have found after a detailed technical study. The controversial dwellings — erected by the Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal — also have poor or non-existent capacity for extension or repair, a much shorter life span than block wall houses, are unlikely to create a sense of ownership, unlikely to foster the local economy and generate employment and are at least double the cost of a block wall house, the experts have warned.

Arrangements are underway to hold special round-table discussions on national security headed by the President and Prime Minister soon. The discussion will be based on a report that the national intelligence Unit has prepared on the national Security in response to comments by the Joint Opposition and some other parties over national security.

News: Sri Lanka – India Naval cooperation strengthened.

Navy Media Spokesperson, Captain Akram Alavi announced that three Indian naval vessels have arrived in Sri Lanka for a joint Naval exercise. The three ships are currently docked at the Colombo harbor. The Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron comprising the INS Tir , INS Sujatha and Coast Guard Ship Varuna, arrived at the Port of Colombo on a training visit on Friday, 15 April. They are expected to leave on 19 April.

The Parliamentary constitutional council has called in Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Neil Iddawela said DIGs C.D. Wickramaratne, Pujith Jayasundara and S.M. Wickremasinghe to attend a meeting on April 18 to choose the new Inspector General of Police (IGP). IGP is the most senior police officer in Sri Lanka who will oversee all police personnel (around 85,000) throughout the country.

News: Increase in Dengue patients reported in 2016

The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health reported that they have registered 14204 Dengu patients this year, which is an increase from previous years. The Ministry of Health said the highest number of patients reported were from the Colombo district, numbering 4919; one thousand seven hundred and twelve (1712) patients from the Gampaha district, 1111 from the Jaffna district and 848 from the Kalutara district were among the reported.

On 14th April, when the nation is celebrating the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar – the chief architect of Indian Constitution, the spotlight is back on a 90-year-old monk who converted him to Buddhism. Bhadanta Pragyanand, the 90-year-old Buddhist monk who is bed-ridden, is the only surviving monk among the seven priests who witnessed the spiritual makeover of Dr Ambedkar on October 14, 1956.

The Sethusamudram project, for which the previous Indian government, led by the National Congress party, sanctioned $124m on June 30, 2012, has stalled due to opposition from environmentalists, political parties and religious groups.

The Labour Party has reaffirmed its strongest possible support for the Tamil people, both in the UK and in Sri Lanka, at the Tamils for Labour event in the Houses of Parliament. Almost 200 members of the Tamil community attended a meeting hosted by the Vice Chair of the Tamil All Party Parliamentary Group (APPGt), Joan Ryan MP, which was addressed by leading figures within the Labour Party, including the Leader Jeremy Corbyn MP, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell MP, Shadow Foreign Secretary Hilary Benn MP and the Senior Vice Chair of the APPGt Siobhain McDonagh.
