News: A Study Into The Unnatural Causes Of Death Among Sri Lankan Women

Sri Lanka is now recognised as a middle-income country. According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), this should ideally indicate a downward trend in violence. However, studies have proven otherwise—the number one cause for hospitalisation is physical trauma. In this article, Roar Media will break down a study published by the UNFPA about unnatural deaths among women and girls in Sri Lanka, and what can be done to prevent it. Hailed as the first study of its kind in Sri Lanka, the report, conducted over a two year period, highlighted the prevalence of gender based violence. The UNFPA commissioned a team of researchers from the University of Kelaniya to undertake the study.

The government yesterday submitted a supplementary estimate seeking the approval of the House for Rs. 371 million (Rs. 371,097,000) to purchase nine vehicles for ministers and deputy ministers. The estimate was presented to the House by Chief Government Whip Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media Minister Gayantha Karunathilake.

Following requests from political leaders, Kollywood superstar Rajinikanth on Saturday announced that he is cancelling his two-day visit to Sri Lanka on an invitation from Lyka Productions, which is alleged to have links with former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa. Clarifying that he has decided to stay away from the event organised by Lyca Productions in Vavuniya, Sri Lanka, following requests from leaders of some political parties in Tamil Nadu, Rajinikanth appealed to the leaders not to prevent him from visiting Lanka if another opportunity arises in the future.

Sri Lanka has got support from the World Bank and Australia for a program to enhance the trade and competitiveness potential of its private sector through regulatory and institutional reforms. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade (MODSIT) and the World Bank launched the joint program of technical assistance and advisory services on Friday.

Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe yesterday charged that the international community is making unrealistic demands from Sri Lanka. Mr Rajapakshe who was speaking during a debate on several regulations in Parliament said looking into the crimes committed during the war time and bringing about reconciliation at the same time is not realistic at all. ‘Reconciliation and probing crimes which took place during the war is like railway tracks which never get together. Probing war time crimes will actually create tension among ethnic groups" he said.

Finally, Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera has acknowledged that, in terms of the Constitution foreign judges couldn’t participate in proposed domestic accountability mechanism in accordance with Geneva Resolution 30/1. Samaraweera hadn’t said anything to that effect since Sri Lanka co-sponsored the resolution in Oct 2015. Twice Foreign Minister Samaraweera made the declaration at the Foreign Ministry on the afternoon of March 16, 2017.

The Government of India felt anguish and pain over the Sri Lankan military’s alleged war crimes against unarmed Tamils in the 2009 war, said External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in an unusually strong observation on the Sri Lanka’s human rights record. Ms. Swaraj said India was committed to the protection of the rights of the Tamils in Sri Lanka, even as the U.N. Human Rights Council (HRC) appeared set to take up a crucial resolution on the issue on Friday.

News: Sri Lankan opposition to foreign judges worries US; UK stresses devolution

At the on-going session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) at Geneva on Wednesday, the US expressed concern over the Sri Lankan government’s statements against having foreign judges in the judicial mechanism it is to set up to try war crimes cases. But the UK laid stress on the importance of devolving power to the Tamils to bring about post-war reconciliation. William J. Mozdzierz, the US representative said that the government’s statements against international participation in any future Sri Lankan judicial mechanism “raise understandable concerns among victims and families about the integrity of any judicial process.”
