Foreign Minister Taro Kono toured Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, announcing during the trip offers of assistance with infrastructure development and other projects. Kono urged the three nations, which all face the Indian Ocean, to cooperate under the “free and open Indo-Pacific strategy” advocated by the Japanese government. Kono’s move was prompted by the government’s increasing vigilance against China, which has been strengthening its influence over these countries with huge amounts of aid money based on its “string of pearls” (see below) marine strategy.

Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya says a silver streak in the present electoral system is an imminent demand for democratizing our political parties in the immediate aftermath of the election. “There will be a compulsion for all political parties to maintain democracy over dictatorship, starting from the point of selecting candidates for elections. If the country did not move towards this, the new electoral system will never reap expected results” he said.

A sexual bribe had been demanded from an actress who had sought to contest the Local Government elections from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) headed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Madusha Ramasinghe told The Sunday Leader online that she had decided to give up acting and enter politics. She says that she sought nominations from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna to contest the Local Government elections.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says funds have been received from China, Japan and India for the construction of the Kandy Expressway. Speaking at a function in Kandy today the Minister said the Japanese government will provide funds to establish a special trade zone in Kandy adding that a Cultural and Tourist Centre will be constructed in Kandy to keep the tourists longer in the country.

Following intelligent information received, Naval personnel attached to Northern Naval Command recovered 90 Kgs of Cannabis (KG), 4 Kgs of Opium and 4 Kgs of Hashish which were hidden in Velvetithurai coastal line, during a raid carried out today\'s morning (6 January). The recovered lot of drugs were packed in containers and it is suspected that they have been hidden for sale. Approximately Rs 30 million worth drugs lot is due to be handed over to Police STF - Jaffna for further legal proceedings.

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) yesterday (4), revealed that the number of complaints being received by them regarding the violation of the rights of students in the country's education system has gone up considerably and that the situation has become aggravated. In this circumstance, the HRCSL was contemplating the submission of an Education Policy Report during the first quarter of this year to the Government.

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Ajith Nivard Cabraal, says that he believes the losses caused by the bond scam is a lot more than what has been stated in the commission report. “I see it as a loss of somewhere between Rs 500 billion and Rs 1,000 billion.” He also said that he is glad that the report of the Presidential Commission on the bond scam has recommended an investigation into the issuance of bonds during the period from 2008 to 2014.

Chairman of Elections Mahinda Deshapriya says all offices put up for the Local Government Election must be removed by the 31st of January 2018. Speaking at a media briefing this morning the Chairman of Elections said posters, cut-outs, flags and other material must also be taken down by 31st of January. Deshapriya noted that election offices of candidates who fail to declare assets by the 20th of January will be removed.
