Written records were always considered a good method of preserving knowledge for the benefit of future generations. The earliest historical records could be found inscribed on material such as clay, metal tablets, and stone. With languages becoming more developed and complex as time went on, our ancestors realised that a more convenient medium was needed for written records. As a result, many South and East Asian countries such as India, Myanmar, Thailand, and, of course, Sri Lanka, began to use dried, old palmyrah leaves to make palm leaf manuscripts for the purpose of writing.

State Minister of Foreign Affairs Vasantha Senanayake recently visited Australia and met Foreign Minister Julie Bishop on the invitation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The two Ministers discussed bilateral issues ranging from the strong people to people links and growing economic relations, to cooperation in countering transnational crimes. Foreign Minister Julie Bishop conveyed Australia’s appreciation to Sri Lanka for its cooperation in combatting people smuggling. Former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and former Navy Commander, Wasantha Karannagoda lodged two complaints with the National Police Commission (NPC) yesterday against a senior officer of the CID for referring their names to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The two men lodged the complaints saying that a young woman, Jeyathi Thyagarajah had stated that a senior CID officer, who visited her house, informed her that former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and former Navy Commander, Wasantha Karannagoda operated a gang that kidnapped people and that her brother was abducted by the aforementioned group.

News: ADB approves $100 million additional funding to enhance skills for jobs in Sri Lanka

The Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Board of Directors has approved a $100 million results-based loan as additional financing for the Government of Sri Lanka’s efforts to develop skills to meet labor demands, support economic diversification, and enhance productivity in the country. “Sri Lanka has achieved universal primary and high secondary enrollment rates, a high adult literacy rate, and gender parity in access to all levels of education. However, there remains a clear mismatch between skills among youth and labor market demand,” said Gi Soon Song, an ADB Principal Social Sector Specialist. “The ongoing skills enhancement program, spearheaded by the government and supported by ADB, will address this issue through a focus on technical and vocational education and policy support.”

News: Sri Lanka arrests top prison official over jail massacre

Sri Lanka’s police Thursday announced arresting a senior prison official in connection with the 2012 massacre of 27 inmates at the high security Welikada jail. Prisons Commissioner Emil Ranjan Lamahewage was taken into custody from his official residence near the prison on Wednesday night, a day after a police inspector was also taken into custody, police said in a statement. Lamahewage was in charge of the maximum security prison as its superintendent when the military and special task force commandoes were called in to quell a riot in November 2012.
