New Delhi [India], Jan 30 (ANI): Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India Chitranganee Wagiswara on Tuesday advised the governments of India and Sri Lanka discuss the fisheries issues. Northern Provincial Council (NPC) Chairman C.V.K. Sivagnanam told a news conference, that it was meaningless to continue with the ban imposed on LTTE within Sri Lanka. \"Eight years has lapsed since the war ended with even former LTTE members joining mainstream politics after surrendering their weapons and in such a scenario continuing with the ban on the LTTE is meaningless,\" he said.

Sri Lanka's government is still using draconian anti-terror laws that give police sweeping powers to arrest and detain suspects despite promising to abolish them, Human Rights Watch said Monday. The Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) allows the detention of suspects for long periods without trial and was widely used during the decades-long civil war that ended in 2009. The government of President Maithripala Sirisena promised to abolish the act after it was elected in 2015, but has so far failed to do so.

President Maithripala Sirisena revealed that the vacant 'Presidential Palace' built in Kankesanthurai (KKS) in the Northern Province on a hundred acre land costing Rs 3.5 billion will be turned into a high end tourist hotel to generate profit for Sri Lanka. Construction on the presidential palace commenced in 2012......and was completed with 20 specially designed rooms and luxury suites with expensive chandeliers, two swimming pools, and rest rooms with residential facilities and several auditoriums as well as a golf course.

Minister of Finance and Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera on Friday said literary works in Sinhala, Tamil and English fostered greater understanding and reconciliation between Sri Lankans. Addressing the 2017 Fairway National Literary Award in Galle at the Fairway Literary Festival, the Minister said this was the only National Literary Awards competition which accommodated all three of the main languages used in Sri Lanka.

Highlighting that hate speech is only a prelude to physical attacks/violence, the Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) urged the authorities to take immediate action to end the systematic hate speech campaign against female Muslim candidates of the forthcoming local government elections. The organisation has consulted with the Commission of Elections and will take action against certain Muslim clerics who have been carrying out the systematic campaign.

A Singapore Sri Lanka free trade agreement (SLSFTA) will be positive for both countries and protections against expropriation will increase foreign direct investments, which can also increase exports, Moody's a credit rating agency ha said. "The agreement also will promote direct investment in Sri Lanka by Singaporean companies," Christian de Guzman, Vice President – Senior Credit Officer said in Moody's credit outlook update. "By easing regulation in the services sector, the SLSFTA will broaden the scope of investment to other areas such as infrastructure, logistics, education and healthcare.

Sri Lanka plans to launch her maiden Sovereign Bond (up to US$ 2 billion) for 2018 around mid-February, Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) officials told Ceylon FT. "We will soon appoint the Lead Managers/Book Runners to the proposed issue. As soon as it is finalized, we are ready to tap into international capital markets, most probably somewhere around mid-February," he said. The proposed transaction is to be Sri Lanka's 12th US dollar ($) benchmark offering in the international Bond markets since 2007.

News: Suspicions raised over Lasantha probe following President’s revelation

Suspicions have been raised over the ongoing investigations into the murder of the founding Editor of The Sunday Leader, Lasantha Wickrematunge following a revelation by President Maithripala Sirisena on Friday. The President said that when he had made inquiries from the relevant officials with regards to the progress of the investigations in 2016, he was told the investigations are expected to be completed in just over a week. He said that the relevant officials had informed him that further legal will be filed in relation to the murder of Wickrematunge as well as the murder of rugger player Wasim Thajudeen and the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda.

LKR 6-175 mn penalty could be imposed on foreign vessels Sri Lanka has increased the fine on foreign vessels fishing in its territorial waters by amending its existing Fisheries Act of 1979. By implication, Indian vessels found fishing in Sri Lankan waters will henceforth be liable to pay anything between LKR 6 million (approximately Rs. 25 lakh) to LKR 175 million.

News: Northern Myliddy, once second largest fish producer, slowly returns to normal

Myliddy in Sri Lanka’s northern Jaffna region, which once had the country’s second largest habour until the raging ethnic conflict destroyed that, is slowly returning to normal. For 27 years, the area was controlled by the army until last July when the Myliddy jetty was released to the public bringing happiness to the people. But living conditions in the area had deteriorated because all the houses were damaged during the war. Kankesanturai buses have extended their services up to Myliddy, but the Myliddy-Point Pedro road is still closed. Myliddy villagers who suffered most have settled in Point Pedro.
