News: Committee demands justice for prisoners

The committee for protecting rights of prisoners staged a demonstration yesterday in front of Welikada Prison to stress the government on protecting the rights of the prisoners and to immediately enforce the law against those involved in the Welikada prison shooting in 2012. They said that the government has failed to implement the law for five years since the shooting at the prison which killed 27 inmates.

The Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) held at Temple Trees recently, organized by the India Foundation, was billed as a gathering of IOR countries and ‘other concerned nations’ with a view to advancing ‘Peace, Progress and Prosperity” in the Indian Ocean. The proposed agreement with India on the privatisation of the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport will include a clause that the airport will not be used for any military purposes, a senior official said.
