During the Eelam war, the UNP government decided to weaken the army by sending troops abroad. UK’s General Rose was invited to study the armed forces and advise on sending Sri Lanka troops for UN assignments abroad (2002). The service commanders had no say in the matter. In 2004, Sri Lanka sent troops to the UN peace keeping forces in Haiti. These troops were not recalled when Eelam war IV started. They continued in Haiti till the UN project ended in 2015. Sri Lanka is one of the longest serving nations in the UN mission in Haiti. They helped in the Haiti earthquake of 2010. They have also provided humanitarian services such as blood

News: Kathua rape case: UK reiterates Modi stand that justice will be done

The Theresa May government on Monday reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise that justice will be done in the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl at Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir, when the matter was raised by a Pakistani-origin member of the House of Lords. The issue was raised by Nazir Ahmed a day before Modi is due to arrive here for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Ahmed, who was at the forefront of an anti-India demonstration on January 26 outside the Indian mission here, will reportedly lead another protest on April 18

Beginning from May 12, 2018, the Office on Missing Persons (OMP) will meet the public including family members of the disappeared in Mannar, Chairman Saliya Peiris PC said yesterday. He said arrangements had been made to hold public meetings countrywide till early July. “In May, June and July, we will hold meetings in Kilinochchi, Matara, Mullaitivu, Batticaloa, Jaffna, Trincomalee and Kandy. In line with its outreach programme OMP, will hold a series of discussions with the families of missing persons, members of civil society organisations and the media, on how we hope to proceed,” he said.

Sri Lanka’s investigation into the controversial MiG aircraft purchase has extended to Singapore and Australia as police listed charges against four foreigners in addition to former president Mahinda Rajapaks’a cousin Udayanga Weeratunga. Two nationals each from Singapore and Ukraine were formally named as accused in defrauding the government of Sri Lanka of nearly seven million dollars in a deal where Weeratunga has emerged the main suspect. Police investigations have now expanded to Singapore and Australia where part of the MiG deal loot may have been invested, official sources said.

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Nimal Siripala de Silva said yesterday (27), the Sri Lanka Freedom Party cannot do whatever the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) wanted, especially with regard to abolishing the Executive Presidency. “We haven’t seen the 20th Amendment to the Constitution to support it. We can’t just do whatever the JVP wants. The powers of the Executive Presidency are vested in many areas of the Constitution, and therefore you cannot simply abolish it. If they do abolish it, they’ll have to bring in at least another 2,000 provisions in its place.”

Sri Lanka has won the bid to host the Round Table International World Meeting (RTIWM) 2018 connecting four leading hotels in Negombo from 5th to 9th September, the organizers of the event announced at a recent press briefing. RTIWM is considered the most important event in the Round Table calendar, with many countries bidding to host the event. Round Table Sri Lanka (RTSL) was successful in its bid to host the 2018 World Meeting at Jetwing Blue, Jetwing Sea, Jetwing Beach and Camelot hotels in Negombo.

The controversial telecom tycoon of Sri Lankan origin Subaskaran Allirajah, boss of Lycamobile, is again at the centre of a French police and media investigation that involves money laundering and tax frauds. A five-part investigation by BuzzFeed News that has been looking closely at the activities of the Allirajah telecom empire in Britain and elsewhere, including Sri Lanka, has revealed in the 5th part of investigation, of a conflict between French prosecutors and British authorities over a request from across the channel for a raid on the offices of Lycamobile in Britain.

Chathurika Sirisena, daughter of President Maithripala Sirisena, has obtained a ‘liquor license’ for a restaurant she owns in Polonnaruwa, the ‘Anidda‘ has reported. ‘Anidda,’ a newspaper launched today, has highlighted the issuance of a liquor license to Sirisena’s daughter but has not revealed the names of all 38 persons who have been given such licenses by the Excise Department in 2016. This revelation comes in the wake of President Sirisena shooting down legislation that sought to overturn an age-old law prohibiting women from purchasing alcohol from taverns or working in restaurants selling liquor.

The US Navy hospital ship USNS Mercy arrived in Trincomalee on Wednesday to conduct the 2018 Pacific Partnership mission. Pacific Partnership 2018 will continue through May 8 and will feature US and other military doctors and medical personnel working side-by-side with Sri Lankan medical professionals to provide treatment to local communities and exchange best practices. Additionally, US and partner nation service members will join their Sri Lankan counterparts in civil engineering projects, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR) readiness training, and public outreach throughout the local community.
