News: UNP decides to unanimously support PM

The Working Committee of the United National Party has decided to support party leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and defeat the No Confidence Motion tabled against him by the Joint Opposition. Decisions were also reached at the Working Committee meeting held this morning to initiate party reforms before the New Year. Speaking to media following the meeting UNP Deputy General Secretary and Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said the Working Committee unanimously decided to support the Prime Minister.

News: Army defends delay in deployment of UN peacekeepers

In a statement, the Sri Lanka Army said it considers it important that the personnel deployed for UN missions at all levels should be individuals of the highest integrity and maintain the highest standards of conduct at all times. “As you would be aware, there have been certain instances in the past where personnel from Sri Lanka deployed in UN missions have not maintained the standards expected of them and disciplinary action has had to be taken in accordance with the relevant and applicable legal provisions. There have also been instances when personnel nominated for deployment have been found to have allegations of misconduct against them,” the Army headquarters said.

The Joint Opposition today claimed that a section of the international media has been helping the government in its propaganda effort to pin the blame for the recent incident of violence in Kandy on the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). “Sections of the international media have continued to amplify and broadcast the Sri Lanka government’s propaganda that the Joint Opposition or the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna was responsible for the recent Sinhala-Muslim disturbances in Kandy,” SLPP Chairman Prof. G.L. News: Sri Lanka president cuts PM's duties in power struggle

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena Wednesday reduced the responsibilities of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as a power struggle worsened within their uneasy coalition. Sirisena took away the central bank, the policy-making National Operations Room and several other institutions from the control of Wickremesinghe, who had held them since coming to power in January 2015. The changes were published in a government gazette notice issued Wednesday which transferred the responsibilities to Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera.

The recent violent incidents in Kandy district underscore the need to expedite efforts to support national reconciliation, a group of EU Ambassadors who visited the city said today. The Ambassador of the European Union, Tung-Laï Margue, Romanian Ambassador Dr. Victor Chiujdea and Ambassador of Switzerland Heinz Walker-Nederkoorn visited Kandy from 27-28 March. Addressing the media in Kandy, they said that Sri Lankans know all too well the consequences of not addressing religious and ethnic hatred.

Chinese Ambassador in Colombo Cheng Xueyuan said that China never interfered in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka and never attach additional conditions to its assistance to Sri Lanka. The Chinese envoy made this remark during a meeting with Secretary General of National Economic Council (NEC) and Chief Economist Prof. Lalith Samarakoon recently, a statement issued by the Chinese embassy said. Ambassador Cheng said China attaches great importance to the bilateral relations and is willing to implement the important consensus of the two leaders and actively push forward the practical cooperation under the framework of “Belt and Road” initiative.

News: Sri Lanka gets US GSP back with Trump signing budget bill

Sri Lanka has regained the United States Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) trade concession with US President Donald Trump signing the budget bill on Friday, the US Embassy in Colombo said on Wednesday. The US GSP program for Sri Lanka and other countries expired on December 31, 2017 as the US Congress did not re-authorize GSP before adjourning for the year. The immediate effect of GSP expiration was that GSP eligible imports to the United States from Sri Lanka and other GSP beneficiary countries and territories were subject to non-preferential duties beginning January 1, 2018.

Two Indian brothel owners have been jailed for life for the trafficking, rape and sexual abuse of children, an unprecedented sentence in a country where fewer than two in five trafficking cases ends in a conviction. Prosecutor Sunil Kumar said Pancho Singh and his wife Chhaya Devi, who ran the brothel in Gaya in the eastern state of Bihar, were found guilty on evidence from "brave survivors" and given the maximum punishment under existing anti-trafficking laws.

News: U.S. adds seven Pakistani companies to sanctions list

Dawn newspaper reported on Monday that in a list prepared by US Bureau of Industry and Security, seven Pakistani firms have been identified as potential threats because they are either involved or are likely to be involved in nuclear activities which compromise US' national security. Now all 23 entities face stringent export control measures, which could prevent them from global trade. An eighth Pakistani entity is based in Singapore.

Minister for National Coexistence, Dialogue and Official Languages Mano Ganesan is right on the money when he says schools which are exclusively for one race or linguistic group “foster” communal disharmony. Ganesan’s attention to the issue has been drawn after several schoolchildren were accused of posting racist and inflammatory messages on Social Media before and during the attacks against the Muslim community in and around Kandy earlier this month. Ganesan has promised to bring in a Cabinet paper to make the changes as soon as possible. The Minister’s thinking is right, and we as a people must take a good hard look at what our children are being taught in school and how we can better foster a Sri Lankan nationality in the schools.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has told the newly-elected UNP local council members, at their swearing-in ceremony at Temple Trees on March 19, that people had elected them not to see those who came on bicycles leaving office in Benz cars. Interestingly his main rival, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had also expressed similar views to the newly-elected local councillors of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) from the districts of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Ratnapura at their swearing-in ceremony held in Colombo just one day after the Prime Minister met his local councillors.
