News: Prelate calls for referendum on new constitution

A referendum should be held on the new constitution proposed by the government, Venerable Anunayake of Asgiriya Anamaduwe Sri Dhammadassi thera told the Highways and Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella. Ven. Sri Dhammadassi Thera said so after receiving a copy of the interim report submitted by the Steering Committee appointed by the Constitutional Assembly.

A new project for water supply to Jaffna utilizing rainfall into the Vadmarachchi Lagoon with a surface area of 78 sq. km. was announced on Friday by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s Policy Development Office. It is only with a great degree of caution and circumspection that the interim report of the Steering Committee of the Constitutional Assembly of Sri Lanka can be welcomed. The panel, chaired by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, has done creditably by producing a forward-looking proposal within 18 months of its first sitting. News: Fonseka Misleads Media On US Visa Issue

Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka misled the media last week by claiming he had been refused a visa to the United States. However, Foreign Ministry sources said that Fonseka’s request for a visa was not even processed. Sources at the Foreign Ministry legal division said that if the visa was rejected, the US Embassy in Colombo would have informed the Ministry.
