A number of housemaids are subjected to molestation by their employers in Saudi Arabia, a local woman who managed to escape a worse fate claimed. "There are a number of women like me who are subjected to molestation by employers in Saudi Arabia. They are suffering. It is only thanks to the Mawbima newspaper and other media that I managed to return to Sri Lanka alive. Those who have a love for their lives please do not go to Saudi Arabia as housemaids," said, 37-years-old Nilanthi Karunaratne.

News: Suspects charged under Int’l Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Act

Twenty two persons arrested in connection with recent ethnic clash in the Gintota area have been charged under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act No 56 of 2007. Law enforcement sources told The Island that the Act had never been used before. Law and Order and Southern Development Ministry had authorised the use of ICCPR Act, sources said, adding that the move was expected to act as a deterrent.

The European Union and Sri Lanka held the fourth dialogue on strengthening investment and trade. The EU's delegation, led by Ambassador of the European Union to Sri Lanka Tung-Lai Margue, included representatives from the UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands. Ambassador Margue said the EU was studying Sri Lanka's latest budget, adding that some of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund objectives had been included.

Korea has increased bilateral concessional loans for Sri Lanka, from US$ 300 million to US$ 500 million, as the two countries celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations. The Army continues to release land held in the Jaffna peninsula. Yesterday, 29 acres including the buildings belonging to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church (St. Mary’s Church) and Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed School (RCTMS), located inside the Palaly Army Cantonment, were handed over to Jaffna District Secretary, N. Vethanayahan, by Major General Dharshana Hettiarachchi, Commander Security Forces (Jaffna).
