President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had come to an agreement about the time for a Cabinet reshuffle, United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera said. While addressing at the weekly SLFP media briefing held yesterday Minister Amaraweera said there would be a definite Cabinet reshuffle.

Hardly a day passes in this country when we do not hear of some trade union creating a rumpus somewhere and threatening to strike over claims that seemingly have to be solved immediately as demanded by it. And if such demands are not granted many problems and social disruptions may follow. The ultimatums are justified, clear and direct at least so far as the trade unions are concerned. Unions of trades, crafts and professions have functioned for a long time.

In spite of several years of discussions and talks the work towards reconciliation in Sri Lanka has not made much progress. In this paper we will try to look into the problem areas relating to reconciliation in the light of multiple discriminations that are entrenched in Sri Lanka. This is against the usual approach of treating the issue of reconciliation only from a racial point of view that is as a conflict defined by racial relationships between Sinhalese and the Tamils communities.

Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga says the government is not engaged in efforts to sideline the importance of national security by directing its focus on reconciliation. Addressing a media briefing this afternoon in Colombo to inform the media on the recently approved National Reconciliation Policy the former president said the President, Prime Minister and head of the Armed Forces convene weekly to discuss the country’s national security.

News: The Kurdish State: Book launched

A successful book launch event of “The Kurdish State”, authored by Jawad Mella was held on 25 March 2017. The book which is in Arabic language will be available in Englisg, Kurdish and others, according to the author. The chief guest was the Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham. It was well attended said Jawad Mella. “There were highly educated and professional kurds, journalists, representative of Kurdistan regional government (Iraq), representatives of Nations without States, Representatives of Kurdish Human Rights in Syria and representative of Amazigh Liberation Movement and other supporters attended the event”, said the author.

I want to bring to your notice of the destruction of a Pillayaar temple at Vellaankulam, in Mannar district of Sri Lanka. Catholic priest in charge of the parish Devanpiddy, a village to the west of Vellankulam towards the coastline led the vandals at midnight on 23rd/ 24th April to destroy the Pillayar temple and attack the Hindu residents causing extensive damage to Hindus and their properties.

The government yesterday submitted a supplementary estimate seeking the approval of the House for Rs. 371 million (Rs. 371,097,000) to purchase nine vehicles for ministers and deputy ministers. The estimate was presented to the House by Chief Government Whip Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media Minister Gayantha Karunathilake.

Following requests from political leaders, Kollywood superstar Rajinikanth on Saturday announced that he is cancelling his two-day visit to Sri Lanka on an invitation from Lyka Productions, which is alleged to have links with former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa. Clarifying that he has decided to stay away from the event organised by Lyca Productions in Vavuniya, Sri Lanka, following requests from leaders of some political parties in Tamil Nadu, Rajinikanth appealed to the leaders not to prevent him from visiting Lanka if another opportunity arises in the future.

Sri Lanka has got support from the World Bank and Australia for a program to enhance the trade and competitiveness potential of its private sector through regulatory and institutional reforms. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade (MODSIT) and the World Bank launched the joint program of technical assistance and advisory services on Friday.
