News: “We don't accept TNA Election Manifesto”: Government of Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan government has said that it cannot accept the election manifesto of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) for the Northern Provincial Council. Cabinet Spokesperson, Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told a news conference Thursday, that the government regrets the contents of the TNA election manifesto. He said that the government could not accept the manifesto as it contravenes the Constitution of the country.

Tamil Nadu politicians use the Sri Lankan Tamils’ issue for their own gains, much to the detriment of the Tamils in Sri Lanka, said Justice C.V. Wigneswaran, the chief ministerial candidate of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) in the upcoming Northern Provincial Council elections. Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Wigneswaran said: “In Tamil Nadu, our problems have been taken to be the ball to be played in the tennis court between the two or three parties. The Tamil Nadu politicians start hitting the ball from one side to the other and it is we who get hit by that.”

“On top of his file folder was a map, depicting by colors which countries have joined the ICC, which countries are being looked at (yellow dots), where prosecutions are ongoing (four red dots, all in Africa) and where Crimes Have Been Committed, noted with a green dot. There was a green dot on Sri Lanka, another on Zimbabwe and one on Myanmar”, reported Intercity Press, a member of the UN press corps.

A referendum under the aegis of the United Nations alone would give a fresh lease of life to "beleaguered" Tamils in Sri Lanka, DMK chief M Karunanidhi said in Chennai today. "Tamils all over the world earnestly expect that the UN would come forward for such a permanent solution (referendum) after the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem Pillay tables report based on her recent tour of Sri Lanka to study the plight of Tamils," he said.

News: The Federal Office for Migration (FOM) will temporarily stop all expulsions to Sri Lanka until they have the results about the alleged torture cases

In two cases, rejected asylum seekers have claimed that they were detained and tortured after their return from Switzerland to Sri Lanka. After NGOs made these cases public, the Federal Office for Migration (FOM) announced last week that they will examine these cases, and that they will temporarily stop all expulsions to Sri Lanka until they have the results about the alleged torture cases.

Five Indians will be among other foreign observers for the provincial council elections in the north scheduled for September 21 after a gap of 25 years. External affairs minister G L Peiris said there will be five Indian observers, including N Gopalaswami, a former Indian elections commissioner, at the northern provincial council elections.

Delivering the national statement at the 24th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva on Monday (9), Sri Lanka's Ambassador to the UN in Geneva and Leader of the Sri Lanka Delegation, Ravinatha Aryasinha said the Government informed UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay during her recent visit to Sri Lanka of the need to adopt an objective and unbiased approach to Sri Lanka in fulfillment of her mandate, and to not give credence to unsubstantiated allegations made by those with vested interests and agendas, largely driven by certain extreme elements in the Sri Lankan Diaspora.

News: Commonwealth to observe Sri Lanka’s Northern Provincial Council Elections

The Commonwealth is to observe Sri Lanka’s Northern Provincial Council Elections, Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma announced today. A Commonwealth Observation Mission will be deployed for the 21 September elections. Former Vice President Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka of Kenya will lead the mission. The Commonwealth Secretary-General constituted the mission at the invitation of Sri Lanka’s Commissioner of Elections.

The Sri Lanka Lawyers Guild, a nationalist organisation in Sri Lanka said they will file a case in the Supreme Court against the election manifesto of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). The Convener of the Guild Attorney at Law Kapila Gamage said that the proclamation of self rule in the manifesto is a violation of the Sri Lanka constitution.

News: TIC Mourns Death of Human Rights Advocate Sunila Abeysekera

We are deeply saddened by the death of our former colleague Sunila Abeysekera in Colombo today. She was sixty-one years of age at the time of her death. Sunila is a scholar and an award-winning human rights campaigner and civil society activist. Secretary General Kofi Annan presented Sunila with a UN human rights award in 1999. She was also honoured for her work by the Human Rights Watch.
