News: Supreme Court rejects ban on Muslim cultural dress

The Supreme Court today issued directives to all National and Provincial schools to permit parents from entering the school attired in their Muslim cultural attire. When a Fundamental Rights Petition was taken up by a bench headed by Chief Justice Mohan Peiris, in to the prevention of a Muslim parent entering Janadipathi Balika Vidyalaya attired in a Hijab, the Chief Justice said that such cultural attire was permitted and within the legal rights of a citizen

News: British Arms Sales to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is among the 27 countries that the British government sold weapons. Britain had supplied £12bn of arms to some 27 countries including Sri Lanka, the House of Commons Committees on Arms Export Controls stated in their 2013 report. According to the Foreign and commonwealth Office, Britain has sold small arms and weaponry to the Sri Lankan Defence authorities. Some of the items sold to Sri Lanka include pistols, components for assault rifles, sniper rifles, pistols, body armour and combat shotguns – despite the Foreign Office still classifying Sri Lanka as a “country of concern” for human rights abuses.

News: PMK flays "denial" of visa to UN team

NDA ally PMK today slammed the Centre for its reported refusal to grant visa to a UN team probing alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka, saying if it was true, it will become "dark pages" in the history of human rights. Citing reports, party founder leader S Ramadoss said Prathiba Mahanamahewa, Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission had confirmed this besides saying that the refusal of visas was a very significant gesture by India.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) says it is monitoring the latest developments in Sri Lanka after President Mahinda Rajapaksa had expanded the mandate of the Missing Persons Commission. OHCHR spokesperson Rupert Colville told The Sunday Leader that OHCHR has noted the Sri Lankan government’s announcement that it is expanding the mandate of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Disappearances to investigate matters related to the loss of civilian life in the final stages of the armed conflict.
