News: Indian observers in Sri Lanka's northern provincial polls

Five Indians will be among other foreign observers for the provincial council elections in the north scheduled for September 21 after a gap of 25 years. External affairs minister G L Peiris said there will be five Indian observers, including N Gopalaswami, a former Indian elections commissioner, at the northern provincial council elections.

Delivering the national statement at the 24th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva on Monday (9), Sri Lanka's Ambassador to the UN in Geneva and Leader of the Sri Lanka Delegation, Ravinatha Aryasinha said the Government informed UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay during her recent visit to Sri Lanka of the need to adopt an objective and unbiased approach to Sri Lanka in fulfillment of her mandate, and to not give credence to unsubstantiated allegations made by those with vested interests and agendas, largely driven by certain extreme elements in the Sri Lankan Diaspora.

News: Commonwealth to observe Sri Lanka’s Northern Provincial Council Elections

The Commonwealth is to observe Sri Lanka’s Northern Provincial Council Elections, Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma announced today. A Commonwealth Observation Mission will be deployed for the 21 September elections. Former Vice President Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka of Kenya will lead the mission. The Commonwealth Secretary-General constituted the mission at the invitation of Sri Lanka’s Commissioner of Elections.

News: Case to be filed in Supreme Court against TNA Constitution

The Sri Lanka Lawyers Guild, a nationalist organisation in Sri Lanka said they will file a case in the Supreme Court against the election manifesto of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). The Convener of the Guild Attorney at Law Kapila Gamage said that the proclamation of self rule in the manifesto is a violation of the Sri Lanka constitution.

The first multi-country study of rape and partner violence has revealed some shocking findings about the prevalence of rape in the Asia-Pacific region. Published as two articles in the British medical journal The Lancet, the United Nations-backed research reports nearly one-quarter of men surveyed in six Asia-Pacific countries admit to committing rape, often against their own partners.

News: TIC Mourns Death of Human Rights Advocate Sunila Abeysekera

We are deeply saddened by the death of our former colleague Sunila Abeysekera in Colombo today. She was sixty-one years of age at the time of her death. Sunila is a scholar and an award-winning human rights campaigner and civil society activist. Secretary General Kofi Annan presented Sunila with a UN human rights award in 1999. She was also honoured for her work by the Human Rights Watch.

News: India to supply two naval warships to Sri Lanka

India is planning to supply two naval warships to Sri Lanka to strengthen its capabilities to guard its maritime boundaries. The two Offshore Patrol Vessels would be built by the Goa-based defence PSU Goa Shipyard Limited and they are expected to be delivered to the Island nation by 2017-18 timeframe.

News: Swiss Federal Office for Migration temporarily suspends repatriation to Sri Lanka

Bern. Non-government organisations (NGOs) have recently reported isolated cases of Sri Lankan nationals who have been arrested by the Sri Lankan authorities and tortured on return to their home country. The Federal Office for Migration (FOM) has taken fast and comprehensive action to investigate the cases that have been brought to its attention. The FOM has no factual knowledge to date as to whether and to what extent Sri Lankan returnees have been unlawfully treated. The imminent repatriation of Sri Lankan nationals has been suspended until the results of the investigations are known.
