News: Thousands recruited as child soldiers, India defends the records of the terror groups before the UN Child Rights Committee

Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) today released its report, “India’s Child Soldiers” (http://achrweb.org/reports/india/JJ-IndiasChildSoldiers2013.pdf), the first ever comprehensive study on the subject in India, and accused the Government of India of defending the records of the armed opposition groups, officially designated as terrorist groups, on the recruitment of child soldiers before the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. India in its first report on the implementation of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict to the UN Committee in 2011 stated that there is no recruitment of child soldiers including by the armed groups in India.

Making a vow to put out all the illegal activities, DIG Western province North sector, Mr Vass Gunawardhana says that the police officers who do not have a backbone to confront criminals in his area should immediately remove himself from the post. Deputy solicitor general of the AG's department state counsel Sarath Jayamanna points out that most of the child abuse and torture cases have been committed by relatives, friends and whom the children know. He made these comments at a media workshop on child protection organized by the National child protection authority.

The collections are mostly covers the period 2000-2004. The largest body of writings, involving several writers, within this book addresses the interrelated figure of Muralitharan, chucking episodes and the attempts to interpret the Chucking law. A number of articles written by the author however, dwell on the issue of verbal intimidation on the cricket field and the sports nationalism.

We have observed the recent attacks on Buddhist monks and other Sri Lankan visitors in Tamil Nadu with grave concern and extreme unease. These attacks are callous and disgraceful and will not help the Sri Lankan Tamils, but may cause them more harm. We offer our heartfelt sympathies to the victims. Certainly, there is no justification for these acts from either a political perspective or, in truth, from the perspective of any other moral and freedom-loving people. These acts diminish the pride, dignity and freedom of Eelam Tamils.

The period since the last Universal Periodic Review in 2007 has witnessed grave violations of the human rights of civilians in Sri Lanka, particularly in the north-east zone, by state authorities and security forces, culminating in the killing of thousands of Tamils. Although large-scale attacks on civilians have stopped since the end of the war in May 2009, violations have continued and human rights defenders (HRDs) have been particularly targeted by the state in all parts of Sri Lanka.
