News: Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka works towards improving country's rights record

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) said that it is working towards improving the country's human rights record and a national inquiry is being planned in this regard. A Commissioner of the HRCSL Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa said that the Commission is preparing to hold a National Inquiry on the practice of Human Rights in the island.

News: WHO’s Report on Violence Against Women

The first global review on the prevalence of the two forms of violence against women — violence by an intimate partner (intimate partner violence) and sexual violence by someone other than a partner (non-partner sexual violence) was published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in June 2013. The report was developed by the WHO, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the South African Medical Research Council. It shows, for the first time, aggregated global and regional prevalence estimates of these two forms of violence, generated using population data from all over the world that have been compiled in a systematic way. The report also details the effects of violence on women’s physical, sexual and reproductive, and mental health.

News: Sri Lanka pays compensation to the war-affected people in North

Sri Lanka, implementing the recommendations made by the Lesson Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC), has initiated a program to pay compensation to the residents of Northern Province affected by violence during the war. Under the first phase of the program, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has symbolically handed over compensation to the families of people who lost loved ones and property and sustained injuries

This article is from Ruth Canagarajah, a Fulbright fellow in northern Sri Lanka who is researching the intersection of natural resources, livelihoods, and post-war challenges has written an article on military land grabs in post war Sri Lanka for the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), an independent organisation and a think tank who cover the major regions and significant issues shaping today’s international agenda. Weak and ineffective property rights pose many problems in post-conflict situations. Secure property rights are needed to revitalize an economy after a volatile period. For many workers, especially farmers and fishermen, their very livelihoods are dependent on secure rights and access to land.

News: India, Sri Lanka, Maldives top security officials discussed Maritime Security cooperation

The National Security Adviser of India, Mr. Shivshankar Menon, visited Sri Lanka on July 8-9 to participate in the 2nd NSA-Level Meeting on Trilateral Cooperation on Maritime Security between India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Committed to "addressing the common maritime challenges in the Indian Ocean region," the three delegations "agreed on a roadmap for future cooperation in maritime security," said an official statement. As a result, they signed an Outcome Document outlining further collaborative measures in the areas of inter alia Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA); strengthening coordination of maritime Search and Rescue (SAR); promoting marine oil pollution response cooperation; expanding 'DOSTI' (friendship) exercises; sharing of information on illegal maritime activities; and piracy.

News: Hindu priest arrested in Indian Temple bombings

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) probing the serial bomb blasts at Bodh Gaya's Mahabodhi temple, has arrested a Hindu priest, Arup Brahmachari, who was said to be a key suspect behind the attacks and was absconding after the blasts. According to Bodh Gaya police, Brahmachari, hailing from West Bengal is now remanded in Rampur police station of Gaya town under strict security. The police also confirm that the NIA team had interrogated several people, including members of the Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee and the temple watch and ward staff.

News: Sri Lanka deplores attack on Indian Buddhist temple

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa deplored the attack on the 1,500-year-old Mahabodhi temple in Bihar early today. Nine near-coordinated explosions shook the world-renowned Mahabodhi temple complex in Bodh Gaya, injuring two monks but not causing much damage. The temple is annually visited by millions of pilgrims from all over the world, especially from Sri Lanka, China, Japan and the Southeast Asia region. The temple complex has direct association with the Buddha (566-486 BC) as it was the place where he is believed to have attained enlightenment in 531 BC while seated under the Bodhi tree.

News: Colombo Fort Magistrate issues summons on IUSF leader Sanjeeva Bandara

Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilinga Gamage issued summons today on Sanjeeva Bandara of the Inter University Student Federation to appear before Court on the 8th of July. The Colombo Crime Division informed the Court that Sanjeeva Bandara has violated the bail conditions by participating in a student protest held in Nugegoda recently. The Crimes Division making submissions told the Court that Sanjeeva Bandara had entered the Sabaragamuwa and Jayawardenepura Universities in the past few days and behaved in an unlawful manner. The Police further told the Courts that the Vice Chancellor of the Ruhuna University has made a written statement saying that Sanjeeva Bandara is not a student of his University.

News: Transnational Security Cooperation course concludes with 26 new alumni

Twenty-six senior executives from 25 locations completed the Transnational Security Cooperation (TSC) course June 21 at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in Honolulu. They included military and civilian leaders from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, China, France, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Maldives, Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua-New Guinea, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam. The course is an intensive program for current and future senior regional influencers/leaders; military officers at the one-to-four-star levels, as well as their civilian equivalents from the Asia-Pacific region. The curriculum emphasizes the impact of current and future change in the region, as impacted by regional and global security threats.

Arguing that too many women seeking sanctuary in the UK are denied the protection they deserve, RWSG calls for an asylum system that recognises and responds to the needs and experiences of women fleeing persecution.
