News: Kankesanthurai Cement factory to reopen

The Sri Lankan State Resources and Enterprise Development Ministry has begun looking into restarting the closed cement plant in Kankesanthurai, Northern Province. The ministry estimates that, with an investment of US$11.4m, the plant can become operational within 12 months. Project proposals to re-establish the factory were presented to State Resources and Enterprise Development Minister Dayasritha Tissera by Sri Lanka Cement Corporation Chairman N S M Samsudeen on 26 July 2013.

News: Colombo Magistrate issues Notice to Shirani Bandaranayake

Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya today issued notice to former Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake to appear in Court on 16 September, for failure to disclose information regarding accounts she maintained in the National Development Bank in her declaration of assets. The notice was issued after considering three cases filed by the Bribery Commission to investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption regarding. It was alleged that Dr Bandaranayake failed to disclose information regarding the two bank accounts she maintained in 2010 to 2011 and 2012.

News: Centre spares no steps to protect Lankan Tamils, says Narayanasamy

Talking to reporters in Puducherry, Union Minister of State in PMO V Narayanasamy said the UPA government was firm that there should be no dilution of the 13th Amendment to the Sri Lankan Constitution. He said, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had assured Tamil Nadu government that there was no change in the stand of the Centre on reconciliation and devolution of political powers to Tamils in Sri Lanka. 13th Amendment is part of the Indo-Lanka accord of 1987 which seeks to give more powers to the provinces. There are reports that the Sri Lankan Lankan government wants to repeal it despite India's concerns.

News: 300,000 register for Samurdhi in Northeast Sri Lanka

Samurdhi Authority of Sri Lanka announced today that the poverty-stricken people of the North and East are to receive allowances under the Samurdhi Poverty Alleviation Programme. It is learnt that over 300,000 families in the North and East have registered themselves with the Samurdhi Authority to receive assistance to supplement their monthly income. This includes 54,000 families from Jaffna, 12,000 from Vavuniya, 84,000 from Ampara, 41,000 from Trincomalee and 30,000 from Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi and Mannar, respectively. Additionally, 84,000 persons have registered from the Batticaloa District.

News: Mahiyangana mosque closed after attacks

Mahiyangana Masjidul Araba mosque in Mahiyangana has been subjected to a spate of attacks, which began with a mob cutting off the power and pelting the building with stones during Ramadan Tharaweeh prayers on 11 July. The main power source was cut off, distrupting mosque activities Furious shouts of threats were heard by those within the building, which minutes later were followed by a shower of stones hurled at the mosque. Many of the windows were broken, but the people within the mosque were able to avoid the stones and no one was hurt.

Japanese Ambassador Nobuhito Hobo, when asked for his views on the debate on amending the 13th Amendment to the Sri Lankan Constitution, said that Japan considered devolution as the key to national reconciliation, as shown in the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission Report.
