Human rights organisations worldwide have demanded protection for potential witnesses at a UN-mandated war crimes investigation into Sri Lanka’s war with the LTTE which ended five year ago. Six organizations in a joint letter expressed alarm over alleged intimidation, threats and reprisals against those likely to engage investigators probing the bloody finale to Sri Lanka's Tamil separatists war.

News: Indian PM Narendra Modi urged Sri Lanka to ensure justice for Tamils

Meeting the six-member Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentary delegation headed by R Sampanthan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Sri Lanka to ensure "equality, dignity, justice and self-respect" for its Tamil minority. The delegation included Mavai Senathirajah, K. Premachandran, P. Selvarajah, Selvam Adaikkalanathan and M.A. Sumanthiran. "The prime minister stressed the need for a political solution that addresses the aspirations of the Tamil community for equality, dignity, justice and self respect within the framework of a united Sri Lanka," an official statement said.

A six member delegation of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) visiting India gave a "detailed" presentation on the current political situation in Sri Lanka to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and sought greater role by India in resolving the ethnic Tamil problem there. The TNA Parliamentary delegation, headed by senior Tamil leader R Sampanthan, called on the minister, who assured that India was for a political solution that "addresses substantially the aspirations of Tamil community in Sri Lanka for equality, dignity, justice and self-respect within the framework of United Sri Lanka".

The civilized Western World has always shown double standard of human rights in the modern era of open diplomacy, economic development and maintenance of fundamental rights of various peoples. But, it is regrettable that major powers like the US and some European countries have continuously been acting upon duplicity regarding human rights violations. In this regard, their silence over the massacre of the Rohingya Muslim community at the hands of the Rakhine extremist Buddhists in Burma (present Myanmar), perpetual bloodshed of Kashmiris in the Indian occupied Kashmir and unending genocide of several Palestinians in Gaza might be cited as example. In these cases, US-led Western World which was overtly or covertly supporting the state terrorism of Myanmar’s military junta, Indian and Israeli regimes was strongly condemned by the Islamic Word’s intellectuals.

Scotland-based Edinburgh Napier University and Spectrum Institute of Science and Technology, Sri Lanka launched two new undergraduate degrees at a reception hosted by British Deputy High Commissioner Laura Davies at Westminster House on Thursday, 14 August, 2014. The new degrees – BSc (Honours) Biomedical Science and BSc (Honours) Microbiology and Biotechnology – are welcome additions to the range of British degrees made increasingly available to students in Sri Lanka.
