News: Enhancing employability of our graduates

A large number of students graduate every year from our 15 state universities and many other degree-awarding institutes in Sri Lanka and, therefore, the employability of graduates has become a critical issue. In the year 2015 alone the state university system produced nearly 35,000 graduates (internal degrees – 17,000, external degrees - 13,000 and Open University degrees - 5000 approximately), and the majority of them (67%) were females.

Tourism Development and Christian Affairs Minister John Amaratunga was caught in camera scolding and apparently attempting to assault a journalist at his party office in Kandana last week. Although Sri Lankans are used to seeing this kind of behaviour by politicians and high ranking officials, as if they had the right to behave in such a manner, this particular incident has not created an uproar in society.

News: Families of missing LTTE cadres meet President in Jaffna Paranagama alleges OMP set up at the expense of useful investigation

A delegation representing those who had fought for the LTTE has requested President Maithripala Sirisena to help trace missing persons. This request was made during a meeting at Northern Province Governor Reginald Cooray’s Office in Jaffna on Monday (June 12). The previous government brought the war to a successful conclusion in May 2009. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa released over 11,000 out of nearly 12,000 LTTE cadres from military custody before the change of government in January 2015.

News: Belgian born Sociologist François Houtart passes away

Belgian Marxist Sociologist Emeritus Professor François Houtart has passed away in Quito, the capital of Ecuador on Tuesday at the age of 92. Rev Fr Houtart's demise occurred while he was taking part in a conference on Eezham Tamils with German-based Viraj Mendis at Quito. Fr Houtart was one of the first world intellectuals to recognise the genocide on Eezham Tamils after the 2009 onslaught on Wanni. He chaired the People’s Tribunal on Sri Lanka, which was held in Dublin in 2010. The investigation process was finally concluded in December 2013 at Bremen in Germany with the findings that Eezham Tamils have been subjected to Genocide.
