Responding to concerns raised by India, Ministry of Defence yesterday denied there is Chinese military presence in Sri Lanka. According to reports Military Spokesperson, Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya had told that there are no Chinese military personnel in Sri Lanka and if anyone claims that Sri Lanka is harbouring Chinese military personnel, it is a misleading statement.

News: Landslide in upcountry: 15 dead and over 400 missing

Fifteen people are reported dead and over 400 missing following a landslide in central Sri Lanka. According to rescue mission, the landslide, which came after heavy monsoon rains, engulfed about 140 houses in Badulla district. The state media Rupavahini showed huge mounds of earth covering the houses, with only parts of the roofs visible on some.

It was a country which was suffering from depleted infrastructure that marginalized the economy in the emerging competitive global environment. Education was not oriented towards providing the much-demanded skills necessary to build up our new generation.

The head of the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE), Visuvanathan Rudrakumaran, has urged the European Union to support to Eelam Tamils in their continuing struggle for justice. In a statement to the media, Rudrakumaran said that the TGTE and Tamils around the world welcome the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union annulling the ban on the LTTE and salutes the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for ensuring rule of law and the role of judiciary in good governance

At the root of crises confronted by the United Nations usually lies a “complex web” of violations of economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights requiring solutions that can only come from more emphatic and comprehensive protections, the Organization’s top human rights official said today. Addressing the General Assembly’s main body dealing with social, humanitarian, and cultural issues (Third Committee), UN High Commissioners for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, said the world is currently facing “deepening turmoil” amid “biting constraints” of funding.
