Sri Lanka’s political upheaval undermined stalled processes aimed at providing truth and justice for abuses from the country’s civil war, Human Rights Watch said today in releasing its World Report 2019. The crisis subsided after the Supreme Court ruled on December 13 that the president’s dissolving of parliament was unconstitutional, and Mahinda Rajapaksa stepped down as proclaimed prime minister.

Over 260,000 Chinese tourists travelled in Sri Lanka in 2018, and the government hopes to attract a higher number this year, Sri Lanka's Tourism Ministry said here on Thursday. According to official statistics, 18,283 Chinese tourists visited the island country in December alone, with the entire year recording 265,965 Chinese arrivals.

Federal prosecutors said Thursday that police arrested 39-year-old Navanithan G. in southwestern Germany Wednesday and searched his home.

Over 650 acres of land off Colombo’s seafront, where a China-backed $1.4 billion port city is currently being built, has been reclaimed, Sri Lankan authorities said on Wednesday. Beijing attaches great importance to the port city, Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Cheng Xueyuan said at a ceremony held to mark what the Sri Lankan government termed “another milestone” in the mega project.

In the North-West corner of the Jaffna Peninsula close to the causeway to Karainagar Island is the small village of Moolai. It is a patch of land connecting the causeway to Karainagar with its famous Casuarina Beach, and Vaddukoddai with its famous school Jaffna College. Moolai would have been quite unknown but for its own famous Moolai Cooperative Hospital. A hospital founded in 1935 by returning Tamil Diaspora funded by their savings and pensions earned administering British Malaya.
