ITJP slams Maj. Gen. Shavendra Silva’s new appointment
Published Date: 11/01/2019 (Friday)

The International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP) headed by Yasmin Sooka, who was a one time Member of the United Nations Report of the Secretary-General's Panel of Experts on Accountability in Sri Lanka to investigate alleged war crimes in the final stages of the Sri Lankan Civil War, condemned the appointment of Major General Shavendra Silva as Chief of Staff of the Army by President Maithripala Sirisena.

Issuing a statement in this regard, ... Sooka noted the new appointment constituted ‘a shocking new low for Sri Lanka’.

The ITJP further said that they he could be ‘charged abroad’ for alleged human rights violations during the last months of the war that ended in 2009.

The ITJP also said that they have prepared a substantial dossier with enough evidence to charge him for alleged international crimes when the opportunity arises.

“The military officer is arguably the most wanted man in Sri Lanka–yet a decade later, tragically, he is being promoted instead of standing trial.

Tamil survivors of the war, thousands of whom have been driven into exile since, have expressed horror that Silva has been chosen for such a senior military position. This is an incredible affront to the victims of that war–and jeopardises any reconciliation attempt in Sri Lanka,” said Sooka.

Silva is alleged to have been personally present at the location of the ‘white flag’ surrenders on 18 May 2009, and has confirmed that he was in overall command of the area, the ITJP alleged.
