Speaker reaffirms MR’s post as Opposition Leader
Published Date: 08/01/2019 (Tuesday)

Deputy Speaker of House Ananda Kumarasiri today informed Parliament that Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa will remain as the Leader of the Opposition.

The Deputy Speaker informed the House today of the final decision by the Speaker of House Karu Jayasuriya pertaining to the post.

The Speaker had claimed that he is not vested with powers under the Constitution or Parliament Standing Orders to suspend a Parliament post or make decisions in this regard.

The Speaker had also responded to the request for a Parliament Select Committee over Mahinda Rajapaksa’s appointment at Opposition Leader.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya had informed that it is against Parliament traditions of a majority party to interfere in internal affairs of a minority party.

The Speaker’s decision was revealed in Parliament by Deputy Speaker Ananda Kumarasiri, as Speaker Jayasuriya is presently overseas.

A group of MPs presented a proposal to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya requesting the appointment of a Select Committee, in order to resolve the contentious Opposition Leader’s post.

The letter was signed by eight United National Party Parliamentarians and Tamil National Alliance MP MA Sumanthiran.

It highlights that Mahinda Rajapaksa and a group of MPs have obtained the membership of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna on or before the 11th of November, despite being elected to Parliament through the United People’s Freedom Alliance ticket.

The document presented to the Speaker notes that a month has elapsed since the group obtained the membership of the SLPP and that amounts to the cessation of their membership from the party they were elected and thereby forfeiting their seats in Parliament.
