Hearing of 11 petitions adjourned for the day
Published Date: 12/11/2018 (Monday)

The hearing of the 11 petitions filed before the Supreme Court challenging the dissolution of Parliament adjourned for the day with the Supreme Court due to convene once again tomorrow.

NewsRadio Court correspondent said the hearing was suspended for 10am tomorrow.

The Attorney General and a petitioner have been issued summons to appear before Court tomorrow when the Supreme Court convenes.

Earlier in the day summons were issued for the Attorney General, who has been named as one of the respondents in the case, to appear before the bench.

A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Nalin Perera today considered the petitions filed by political parties, over the dissolution of Parliament.

A total of 11 petitions have been filed at the Supreme Court so far, against the issuance of Gazette 2096/70 by President Maithripala Sirisena on Friday purportedly dissolving the Eighth Parliament.

NewsRadio Court correspondent said the United National Party, the Tamil National Alliance, the JVP, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and the All Ceylon Makkal Congress have filed fundamental rights petitions against the issuance of the Gazette.

NewsRadio Court correspondent said President Maithripala Sirisena, Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Attorney General and the Chairman of the Elections Commission have all been named as respondents.

The petitions cite that following the enactment of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, the powers of the Executive to dissolve Parliament have been limited.

Accordingly the petitioners are seeking an order to annul the 2096/70 Gazette issued on Friday.

NewsRadio Court correspondent said the petitioners are also seeking an order to prevent the conduct of the Parliamentary Elections until the conclusion of the hearing of the case.
