Federation of Saiva (Hindu) Temples – UK calls on President Maithiripala Sirisena to review appointment of a Muslim as a Minister for Hindu Affairs
Published Date: 13/06/2018 (Wednesday)

In an open letter to the Sri Lankan President Maithiripala Srisena, the Federation of Saiva (Hindu) Temples – UK writes,

We, the representative body of 23 Saiva/Hindu temples in the UK, write with deep sorrow, concern and anguish on the subject of much publicised appointment of National List MP Kader Masthan as Deputy Minister of Resettlement, Rehabilitation, Northern Development and Hindu Religious Affairs.

Both Hinduism and Buddhism have shared parallel beliefs that have existed side by side for centuries. Both our religions differ with Islam on apostasy, blasphemy, circumcision, consanguineous marriages, idol making, henotheism, social stratification, vegetarianism, and Ahimsa as a virtue

We consider this appointment of a Muslim as Deputy Minister of Hindu Religious Affairs is insensitive and a mischievous act and in that it is hurtful to note Your Excellency could not reflect the sensitivities of the Saiva/Hindu community to appoint a Hindu parliamentarian for the position.

What troubles us most is, whether Your Excellency as a Buddhist, would have the courage to appoint a Muslim as Minister for Buddhist Religious Affairs, knowing very well the sensitivities involved. We view this appointment with much cynicism and attribute it as on-going historical process to undermine the feelings of socio-religious-cultural divide of the island.

This appointment undermines the very issue of post war reconciliation and the need to avoid contributing towards fermenting hatred further

We earnestly appeal to you, Your Excellency, to respond to the downright hurt of the Saiva/Hindu community on this appointment and take immediate steps to amend this transgression with the appointment of a Hindu minister without furthering our hurt

M Gopalakrishnan

For and behalf of Federation of Saiva (Hindu)Temples U.K
