Parliament won't be dissolved- Austin
Published Date: 14/04/2018 (Saturday)

Secretary to the President Austin Fernando says President Maithripala Sirisena has no intention of dissolving Parliament.

Speaking to the BBC Sandeshaya the Secretary to the President said the Head of State prorogued Parliament according to provisions vested with the Constitution.

Austin Fernando said the time that Parliament will convene on the 8th of May will be notified in due course.

Fernando added the decision to prorogue the session will have no impact on the progress on the formation of the new Constitution.

The Secretary to the President said matters that could not be settled during the previous Parliament session will continue at the new session commencing on the 8th of May.

The Government has stressed the prorogation of Parliament has no negative impact on the functioning and operation of the Government.

Issuing a statement Director General of Government Information Sudarshana Gunawardana said Under Article 70(4) of the Constitution of Sri Lanka “All matters which, having being brought before Parliament, have not been disposed of at the prorogation of Parliament, may be proceeded with during the next session”.

Therefore the Director General stated the prorogation of Parliament will not have any negative impact on the functioning and operation of the Government whatsoever.

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday issued a gazette notification proroguing Parliament with effect from midnight, until the 8th of May.

According to the Extraordinary Gazette Notification, issued by the Secretary to the President Austin Fernando, the President officially declared the parliament will be prorogued with effect from midnight on Thursday, 12th April.

The next session of the Parliament is due to be called on the 8th of May.

President Sirisena reached the decision to prorogue the parliament, according to the powers vested in the Head of State, by Article 70 of the Constitution.

The Government Information Department clarified the prorogation is the period between the end of a Parliament session and the opening of the next Parliament session.
