Mahanayake Thera of Asgiriya Chapter says Unity Govt should be scrapped

The Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter of the Siam Nikaya has called for the end of the Unity Government and urged President Maithripala Sirisena to install a new single party or alliance Government.

In a statement released through the Chief Secretary of the Chapter, the Most Venerable Warakagoda Gnanarathana Mahanayake Thera said that if such a Government could not be formed, then steps should be taken to dissolve Parliament and hold a General Election.The President is prevented from unilaterally dissolving Parliament for four and a half years by the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, but the House could pass a resolution to dissolve.The Mahanayake Thera condemned moves by political parties, leaders of political parties, and the Government to retain power or topple the Government calling them a lust for power.

The statement said that the current situation was adversely impacting the economy, with fresh investments being negatively affected and the rate of the United States Dollar rising excessively against the Rupee. He claimed that the 19th Amendment to the Constitution had been enacted for the betterment of the Government. He called for the President and the Prime Minister to understand the current situation and be flexible towards a solution and prevent the further decline of their respective Parties. In particular, he called on Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe to heed the view of his fellow United National Party Parliamentarians. "The country must not be made unstable. The elected representatives of the people, the politicians must act on behalf of the nation's best interests and the welfare of the public and not based on selfish and narrow personal agendas. What is taking place is political gambling for which the responsibility of bearing the burden of the proposed new Cabinet will fall upon the masses whose public funds will be spent for this lie, the latter being a change of heads helming certain Ministerial portfolios and subjects. The Government suffered a heavy defeat at the recently concluded Local Government Election. It is the people's wish. The hybrid so called Unity Government is unsuccessful. The Government must be stable."
