Published Date: 09/01/2018 (Tuesday)

BY Kavindya Perera

Colombo Additional Magistrate Thanuja Jayathunga yesterday (8) ordered two suspects charged with displaying and distributing the emblem of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam organization and the photo of its late Leader V. Prabhakaran, by way of greeting cards for 2018 on Facebook, to be remanded till 17 January.

The suspects were identified as Dinesh Kumar and Vijaya Kumar Vidushan.

Investigations were conducted by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) following a complaint lodged by Pathum Rasanga, a resident of Ratnapura. TID officers submitted a progress report on the case to Court yesterday.

The complainant had pointed out that a Facebook account had been opened under the name Vidushan Roxy and through it greetings that had been conveyed for 2018 by publishing the emblem of the Tamil Tigers and the photo of Prabhakaran.

The complainant had pointed out that such acts, if not nipped in the bud could pave the way for unease among different ethnic groups residing here and could generate into race riots in time to come. TID officials further pointed out that investigations had revealed that the suspect Dinesh Kumar through his Facebook account had attempted to publicise the motives of the Tamil Tigers including the long-term goal of a separate State of Eelam. They told Court that the word 'Eelam' had been embossed on the map of Sri Lanka while photos of many Tamil Tiger cadres attired in official uniforms had also been prominently displayed. The plaintiff further pointed out that the suspects had committed wrongdoings under Section 3 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Act, No. 56 of 2007.Having taken the submissions into consideration, the Colombo Additional Magistrate ordered the TID to inform Court whether the suspects had committed offences that had been referred to forthwith.
