No truth in North-East amalgamation - Hakeem
Published Date: 09/01/2018 (Tuesday)

"Some politicians who could not bear to see the masses being with us have been spreading stories that we support the amalgamation of the North and East solely for our political existence. We need not block the aspirations of the Tamil Community", so said Minister of Water Supply and Town Planning and Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Rauff Hakeem at an SLMC propaganda meeting supporting SLMC candidates in Nintavur Former Provincial Council member Ariff Samsudeen presided over the meeting.

Minister Hakeem further said "Those who enjoyed the maximum benefit from the SLMC have now left us". In addition, he added that out of the 15 who were appointed as National List MPs, 11 were not with us anymore and were criticizing us. He also added, "My political opponents are spreading stories that I have been secretly holding talks with those at the top to amalgamate the North and East merely for my political survival. It was the Former Secretary General Hassen Ali who during his tenure who wanted the amalgamation of the North and East and was now giving a twist to the stories to suit him. These stories are a fiction of his imagination and there is no truth in what he is being saying. As if Parliamentarians Wimalaweera Weerawansa and Dinesh Gunawardena's talks in Parliament and other public platforms are solely for political benefit, similarly we too do the same at certain instances", he added.

Talking on his stand on North East merger , Minister Rauf Hakkem said he would never support for any moves against Muslims and in the meantime he would never be an obstacle for Tamil National Alliance's reasonable demands. Whatever said and done nothing will be in reality unless a separate Muslim Province is established and he reiterated that under any circumstances we would never allow any elements to delve with the rights and privileges of Muslims of this Country and we assure you that we would safeguard the Muslims' aspirations of this country.

Deputy Minister of Health Faizal Cassim, Party Chairman Abdul Majeed and several high command members too addressed the gathering.
