Kiriella informs Mahanayake of unprecedented support for new constitution from Tamil parties
Published Date: 10/10/2017 (Tuesday)

Highways Minister Lakshman Kiriella told the Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanaratana Mahanayake Thera of Asgiriya Chapter on Saturday that Tamil political parties in an unprecedented manner extended support for the proposed Constitution.

Minister Kiriella said so presenting a copy of the Interim Report to the prelate.

Minister Kiriella told the prelate that the Tamil political parties had not cooperated to help ratify the Constitution of Sirimavo Bandaranaike in 1972. Nor had they backed the Constitution of J. R. Jayewardene of 1978, he added.

Minister Kiriella assured that the foremost place given to Buddhism and the unitary status of the country would remain in the proposed Constitution.

The draft Constitution would be presented to Parliament and debated so that members of Parliament of all parties could express their views and even propose any amendments, Minister Lakshman Kiriella said.

Minister Kiriella requested the most Venerable Mahanayake to peruse the report and express his views. The Mahanayake thera consented.

Addressing the media after presenting the Interim Report to the prelate, Minister Kiriella said all Tamil political parties had pledged their support to help pass the new Constitution due to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe’s efforts.

The minister also reiterated that SAITM (South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine) would not be closed down. The protesting students should return to universities and resume their education, he added.

There was no controversy over the construction of the Central Expressway, he said, adding that a Japanese, Chinese and Sri Lankan firms had been given the task of constructing it.

The Central Expressway was to be constructed in the year 2020 even before the completion of the Southern Expressway, he said.

The government had no plans to sell out national resources, Namal Rajapaksa being a lawyer himself should know the difference between selling and leasing out, Kiriella added.
