The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee has responded with emergency aid to More than 200 people have been confirmed dead and at least 100 missing in the worst storms to hit the island nation since 2003. JDC, together with its local partner Sarvodaya, a Buddhist-inspired humanitarian organization, deployed its first responder unit to provide food, water, and other emergency aid in Sri Lanka’s five hardest hit districts.

Constitution was held at Mount View Hotel, Badulla, on Monday 22nd May. Lal Wijenayake was the keynote speaker. Very lucidly explaining the work that had been done in preparation for drawing up the draft of the New Constitution, Wijenayake said that over 2500 persons representing various important groups of people were interviewed and over 3000 written statements were examined. Further, the six subcommittees of parliamentarians have submitted their observations on matters pertaining to 1. Fundamental rights 2. The Judiciary 3. Law and Order 4. Public Finance 5. Public Service 6. Centre Periphery Relations.

Wake up, JVP tells Govt., before country heads towards another bloodbath

Amidst a surge of attacks on mosques and Muslim-owned business establishments across the country, in the past few weeks, the JVP urged the government to awaken from its slumber and arrest the spiralling number of racial and communal acts of violence. “The government should have acted fast to nip this in the bud but what it is displaying instead is an impotent and ineffectual attitude to this dangerous situation which has the ability to push the country towards another bloodbath,” JVP Leader MP Anura Kumara Dissanayaka told Parliament on Wednesday.

The Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) has lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission against the warrant issued for the arrest of its Chief, Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera. The BBS warns that Gnanasara Thera could be assassinated in a manner......similar to that of the underworld bigwig Samayan, who was killed by a group clad in Police uniforms.

New Constitution wording raises the heat

TNA leader R. Sampanthan has demanded that the transliteration of Sinhala word, ‘akeeya’ be incorporated into the proposed draft constitution (English version) in place of word, ‘unitary’. MP Sampanthan reacted angrily to Minister Nimal Siripalala de Silva’s response that such a position wasn’t realistic.

Sri Lanka receives foreign aid after flooding and landslides leaves 146 dead

The number of people known to have been killed in floods and landslides in Sri Lanka rose to 146, officials said on Sunday, as the country appealed for international assistance. The state-run disaster management centre said 112 people were still missing and 50 people were injured in hospital after the worst torrential rains since 2003.

Sri Lanka hunts Buddhist monk over anti-Muslim hate crimes

Sri Lanka's police launched a major manhunt for a controversial Buddhist monk wanted in connection with a spate of attacks against mosques and Muslim-owned business. Police said they were working to track down and arrest Galagodaatte Gnanasara, head of the radical Buddhist Force or BBS, after he went into hiding.

President meets Aussie PM

President Maithripala Sirisena met Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at the National Parliament building in Canberra and held bilateral talks today. President Sirisena is scheduled to visit Sydney during the three-day official visit. This is the first time a Sri Lankan Head of State has made a state visit to Australia and it follows Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s Australian visit in February.

Civil organizations which ensured that this Government came to power, are warning the Government against continuously postponing the preparation of a new Constitution,......which was the main slogan used when the Government of Good Governance when it came to power. These organizations emphasized this at a media briefing held yesterday. They said that it has been said that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) was unwilling to totally abolish the executive presidency but while remaining in ministerial posts in the government, the SLFP has no moral right to oppose abolishing the executive presidency.

Sri Lanka police 'failing to stop anti-Muslim attacks'

Rights groups accused Sri Lankan police of failing to stop a wave of hate crimes against Muslim businesses and mosques in the Buddhist-majority country. Police are yet to make any arrests in connection with more than a dozen arson attacks against Muslims shops, mosques and a burial ground in the past month.

Who is a Buddhist? That’s a simple question but one that can yield innumerable answers. The innumerability of course can be explained and explained innumerably through reference to the Buddhist canon. The point is, labelling and self-labelling are both easy exercises. For the record, if you replace ‘Buddhist’ with the follower of any other faith, again there can be many responses whose multiplicity can severally be explained drawing from the particular doctrinal canon.

Field Marshal says no withdrawal of security forces from North

Former war winning army commander and current Minister Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka yesterday said that the government would not dance to the tune of every Tom, Dick and Harry; it would not withdraw the security forces stationed in the north. Constitution making would not be delayed: PM

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday that he had informed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other world leaders that the constitution-making process would not be delayed. He said this at the opening of the new District Secretariat Office in Mannar and underscored the fact that Mr. Modi and other world leaders including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had hoped Sri Lanka would resolve the national question through a constitutional process.

Sri Lanka President promises measures to probe disappearances, establish OMP

Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena today said that if information pertaining to the locations of the missing persons being detained is revealed the government will be able to formulate a program to inspect such places. The President said a special committee will be appointed soon to look into the matter of missing persons while taking into consideration reports and recommendations of former commissions.

Joint mechanism for NP development

A group of young activist in the UK, participating in the Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day event opposite British Prime Mister’s office No. 10 Downing Street, Westminister, submitted a petition to the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Theresa May, signed by 138 grieving mothers who are currently staging a protest in Kilinochchi, northern District in Ilankai. A similar petition was also given to UN Secretary General António Guterres, by the Tamil Coordinating Committee – (TCC-UK).
