The Global Sri Lanka Forum (GSLF) has been assured by Lord Naseby of his continued support for its efforts to counter unsubstantiated war crimes allegations against the armed forces as well as the previous political leadership. The assurance was given when a GSLF delegation met Lord Naseby at the British Parliament on Thursday evening (Nov 30) to appreciate his support rendered for Sri Lanka’s efforts over the years.

Neutral foreign policy A tight rope walk

President Maithripala Sirisena keeps foreign policy analysts guessing all the time. It was only last month that many analysts came up with their textbook prediction that he had antagonized the United States and its Middle East friends like Saudi Arabia, when he paid a State visit to Qatar. Before the dust of criticism settled down, President Sirisena undertakes another State visit - this time to South Korea and the so-called foreign policy experts are totally baffled as they are not sure whether the visit should be described as a pro-US gesture or not.

Korea hikes bilateral concessional loans to SL to US$ 500 million

Korea has increased bilateral concessional loans for Sri Lanka, from US$ 300 million to US$ 500 million, as the two countries celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations. Extension of the Framework Agreement (FA) for Official Development Assistance (ODA) from the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) entrusted with Korea Eximbank , was signed in the presence of President Maithripala Sirisena,in Seoul on Thursday.

Army hands back 29 more acres to civilians

The Army continues to release land held in the Jaffna peninsula. Yesterday, 29 acres including the buildings belonging to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church (St. Mary’s Church) and Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed School (RCTMS), located inside the Palaly Army Cantonment, were handed over to Jaffna District Secretary, N. Vethanayahan, by Major General Dharshana Hettiarachchi, Commander Security Forces (Jaffna).

UN experts on arbitrary detention to visit SL

Sri Lanka to probe biggest Rajapaksa pyramid scam: PM

Sri Lanka will investigate the sale of over five thousand billion rupees in treasury bonds by the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said describing it as the "biggest pyramid scam" in the country. Dialog Axiata PLC and Australian Govt. pilot digital payment platform in Northern Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s premier connectivity provider, Dialog Axiata PLC and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) collaborate to pilot a digital payment platform roll-out across 200 ATM (Automated Teller Machine) locations in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province. The announcement was made recently at the launch ceremony held in Jaffna. With Rs. 60 million from DFAT’s Business Partnerships Platform and Rs. 91 million of its own funding, Dialog intends to reach and support underbanked communities with its state-of-the-art digital payment retail system.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that the government expects to hold the Local government polls in January as agreed before and after that the postponed Provincial Council elections in March next year.
