People’s turn to punish the liars and thieves!

As the cloud sets in on the completion of the third year of the Yahapalanaya Government, the wave of corruption that bestows this nation continues to flame. The advent of the Coalition Government led by President Sirisena and Premier Wickremesinghe was an endorsement by the people to prioritise anti-corruption and improve governance. However, the Bond Commission Report only justifies that corruption and fraud are an inherent gene in successive governments and it is only the characters that change.

UN child rights committee to review SL

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child would review children’s rights in Sri Lanka on January 15 and 16 in Geneva, the Office of the UN Human Rights High Commissioner said today. The committee would also review Guatemala, Panama, Seychelles, Spain, Solomon Islands, Palau and Marshall Islands on different sessions spanning till February 2.

Canada, UNFPA to address sexual, gender-based violence in Sri Lanka

The High Commissioner of Canada to Sri Lanka, David McKinnon, and Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Sri Lanka, Ms. Ritsu Nacken, signed a letter of agreement in reference to a grant arrangement of CDN$900,000. The grant is provided by the Government of Canada to UNFPA Sri Lanka for the delivery of the project, ‘Addressing Sexual Gender-based Violence through Public Institutions‘, by 31 March 2020.

Sending LTTE/Prabhakaran greeting cards via Fb Court remands duo

Colombo Additional Magistrate Thanuja Jayathunga yesterday (8) ordered two suspects charged with displaying and distributing the emblem of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam organization and the photo of its late Leader V. Prabhakaran, by way of greeting cards for 2018 on Facebook, to be remanded till 17 January. The suspects were identified as Dinesh Kumar and Vijaya Kumar Vidushan. Investigations were conducted by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) following a complaint lodged by Pathum Rasanga, a resident of Ratnapura. TID officers submitted a progress report on the case to Court yesterday.

Prince Edward chief guest at 70th freedom festival

Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh is expected to be the chief guest at the 70th Independence Day celebrations on February 4, a senior Home Ministry official said. The main parade on that day will be held at the Galle Face Green, the same venue that independent Lanka’s first Prime Minister, D.S. Senanayake, brought down the Union Jack, and hoisted the Lion flag to mark Sri Lanka’s freedom from 400 years of colonial rule, some 150 years under the British.The official said the invitation to a member of the British Royal family was sent through the Foreign Ministry, and had been accepted.

DKP Dassanayake & 5 others granted bail

Six individuals including former Navy Media Spokesman Commodore DKP Dasanayake who were arrested and remanded on charges of assisting and issuing instructions for the abduction and disappearance of several persons, have been granted bail. The order was issued by Colombo High Court Judge Manilal Waidyathilaka this afternoon. Commodore Dasanayake was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department in July 2017 on charges of assisting and issuing instructions for the abduction and disappearance of the 11 youth between the years 2008 and 2009 in Colombo.

Tamils protest outside Swiss court against case on LTTE supporters

Over 150 Tamils protested outside a Swiss court on Monday against a trial involving thirteen LTTE financiers. The protesters held posters of the LTTE and its slain leader Vellupillai Prabakaran and made statements in support of a separate Tamil state in Sri Lanka. Thirteen financiers accused of funnelling more than CH15 million ($15.3 million) to the LTTE stood trial before the Swiss Federal Criminal Court on Monday.

Sri Lanka President eyes another year in office, heads for show down

Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena has asked the Supreme Court if he can remain in office for six years despite having reduced his tenure to five through a constitutional amendment, officials said Tuesday. The move to seek an interpretation to the 19th amendment to the constitution which among other things reduced the term of office to five years will put Sirisena on a collision course with his senior coalition partner.

Kono seeks to boost Indian Ocean relations

Foreign Minister Taro Kono toured Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, announcing during the trip offers of assistance with infrastructure development and other projects. Kono urged the three nations, which all face the Indian Ocean, to cooperate under the “free and open Indo-Pacific strategy” advocated by the Japanese government. Kono’s move was prompted by the government’s increasing vigilance against China, which has been strengthening its influence over these countries with huge amounts of aid money based on its “string of pearls” (see below) marine strategy.

Sexual bribe sought from actress to contest from MR’s party

A sexual bribe had been demanded from an actress who had sought to contest the Local Government elections from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) headed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Three countries funded Kandy Expressway- PM

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says funds have been received from China, Japan and India for the construction of the Kandy Expressway. Speaking at a function in Kandy today the Minister said the Japanese government will provide funds to establish a special trade zone in Kandy adding that a Cultural and Tourist Centre will be constructed in Kandy to keep the tourists longer in the country.

Navy recovers 98 Kgs of narcotics

Following intelligent information received, Naval personnel attached to Northern Naval Command recovered 90 Kgs of Cannabis (KG), 4 Kgs of Opium and 4 Kgs of Hashish which were hidden in Velvetithurai coastal line, during a raid carried out today\'s morning (6 January). The recovered lot of drugs were packed in containers and it is suspected that they have been hidden for sale. Approximately Rs 30 million worth drugs lot is due to be handed over to Police STF - Jaffna for further legal proceedings.

France seeks Sri Lanka's support for Expo 2025 bid

The head of France's bid to host the 2025 World Expo held talks with Sri Lankan leaders Friday in a bid to secure their support. SL education system:Violation of students’ rights on the rise – HRCSL

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) yesterday (4), revealed that the number of complaints being received by them regarding the violation of the rights of students in the country's education system has gone up considerably and that the situation has become aggravated. In this circumstance, the HRCSL was contemplating the submission of an Education Policy Report during the first quarter of this year to the Government.
